What is Pilates?
Pilates is often thought of as all about the core, but it's so much more than that! While it’s true that Pilates helps to strengthen the muscles of the abdomen, it also works on improving posture, alignment, flexibility, and overall body control, making it a full mind-body workout for all levels. Whether you're just starting your fitness journey or are a seasoned athlete, Pilates can help you move with greater ease and confidence.
Created by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, who often called it "Contrology", and focused on the complete coordination of the body, mind, and spirit. Joseph Pilates believed that modern society's sedentary lifestyle, especially our time spent hunched over screens, impairs physical fitness. His method aims to reprogram movement patterns, especially those that have led to issues like back pain, poor posture, and muscle weakness.
Pilates has a rich history as both a restorative and athletic practice. The exercises focus on re-toning muscles that may have become "soft" from disuse, which is why Pilates is accessible to everyone—no matter their age, fitness level, or body type. Joseph Pilates’ goal of his method was to help people "acquire complete control of your own body," creating better coordination and function in everyday activities.
The core—made up of muscles in the abdomen, spine, and hips—is the foundation of Pilates, and the powerhouse of the body! The whole body works together in each movement, helping you build strength, flexibility, and balance.
Pilates isn’t just a workout; it’s a lifestyle. It’s way to connect with your body, reduce stress, and cultivate a sense of balance. It’s a practice that flows—allowing for ease, control, and release—just like a beautiful piece of music, dance or art.
So, what is Pilates to you? Whether you're using modifications to build strength or diving deeper into the practice, Pilates can truly change the way you move, feel, and live. Pilates can offer something for everyone. Come experience how Pilates can transform your life and movement, one breath at a time.
